Jason Aaron’s reboot, or soft reboot, of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles ended with issue #12, leaving the Turtles in a much more optimistic and tight-knit position than when they started. Each of his first issues focused on a different Turtle in turn, but they gradually came together to become the team we’ve always known and loved.

Gene Luen Yang’s run begins here, working with the always reliable Freddie Williams II in art, and our sons are much closer to the status quo than ever before.

But there’s still one element missing. It turns out that their father, Splinter, died, but was somehow communicating with his sons from the other side. Also, a new beastly vigilante group is on the loose. Their high-handed and violent tactics can spark gang wars in New York.

So will it be another day in paradise for the TMNT?

Other than Leonardo randomly saying “Turtles!” to the brothers, Yang doesn’t do anything wrong here (unintentionally). We have some mysteries, a new enemy for the Turtles, and the brothers working together again (they are brothers after all, though they continue to bicker). It’s wonderful.

Of course, Freddie Williams II does his usual fine job with heavy, detailed art. The only thing I wasn’t sure about was that each Turtle’s mask had a different shape. But it’s really annoying. I’ve always enjoyed his art and it brings a pleasant action figure feel to the visuals, which I love.

The Turtles seem to be in very safe hands once again, as this issue also has a surprising cliffhanger. I’m really looking forward to catching up with them in the next issue.

Hello! I’m Jason. I write articles for midlifegamergeek.com every day. If you’re interested in supporting original, regularly published, human-generated content (that’s never been plagiarized or copied through the efforts of other writers), please help us keep this site running by making a donation.

Not only do I not earn any money from my writing here (although I do earn a small commission from affiliate links posted on my page, but as an Amazon Associate I do earn from qualifying purchases from these links), my work sometimes seems to be stolen and repurposed by lazy, morally bankrupt idiots.

No pressure, of course, but we really appreciate any support you can provide. You can easily support us through Ko-Fi.com/geekmid or the PayPal link.

Thank you very much for your donation. I would also like to thank you for taking the time to read my article. Please remember. This entire article is by Jason Brown and can be found at midlifegamergeek.com. Take that, Skynet!

Please support me here!

All donations are gratefully received and will not only help me keep the lights on here, but will also help keep my writing dream alive. However, please understand that there is no pressure. I hope you enjoy reading my article.
