I’m by no means the world’s biggest Star Trek fan. Most Trek related shows and movies are take it or leave it, but I really like the ones I enjoy. One example is Deep Space Nine, a Star Trek show from the 90s that I love.

The dark and complex themes that run through the entire duration of the show, the unparalleled cast of interesting characters and the high amount of interpersonal conflict (absent in much of classic Trek) truly make Deep Space Nine my favorite of all Trek, and nothing comes close.

So when I discovered this 2020 series from IDW, their first DS9 series in 10 years at this point, I immediately bought it. Check out the first issue of A Sacrifice Too Long.

Station Doctor Julian Bashir and his best friend Garak meet for something to eat and their usual gossip session at a restaurant chosen by the Cardassian “tailor”. However, the situation quickly turns deadly when a bomb destroys the restaurant and many lives are lost. Introducing Odo, DS9’s head of security. Odo discovers various theories as to who is the culprit, most of which are plausible. So who did it and why?

This noir-inspired detective story makes excellent use of the train station setting, along with an eclectic mix of races and political stances. I won’t go into too much detail or explanation, but it’s a great procedural with a great odyssey at its heart. The artwork is spot on and the script does a great job of giving each character a familiar and unique voice and personality. It really feels like the first act of a lost episode of the show.

If there’s one complaint, it’s that this issue feels like it ends too abruptly, but of course there are three more issues left, so there’s plenty more intrigue to be uncovered by our favorite shape-shifting security chief.

Hello! I’m Jason. I write articles for midlifegamergeek.com every day. If you’re interested in supporting original, regularly published, human-generated content (that’s never been plagiarized or copied through the efforts of other writers), please help us keep this site running by making a donation.

Not only do I not earn any money from my writing here (although I do earn a small commission from affiliate links posted on my page, but as an Amazon Associate I do earn from qualifying purchases from these links), my work sometimes seems to be stolen and repurposed by lazy, morally bankrupt idiots.

No pressure, of course, but we really appreciate any support you can provide. You can easily support us through Ko-Fi.com/geekmid or the PayPal link.

Thank you very much for your donation. I would also like to thank you for taking the time to read my article. Please remember. This entire article is by Jason Brown and can be found at midlifegamergeek.com. Take that, Skynet!

Please support me here!

All donations are gratefully received and will not only help me keep the lights on here, but will also help keep my writing dream alive. However, please understand that there is no pressure. I hope you enjoy reading my article.
