It took me a really long time to get around to reading the first volume of Plants vs. Zombies, Dark Horse’s comic adaptation of the popular video game series.
The game was released in 2011, and while it was still a few years after the first game was released, it’s notable that it only features elements from the first game, as subsequent sequels and spin-offs (such as the Garden Warfare series) had yet to be released. Is that a good thing? Let’s find out.
Nate Timely doesn’t seem to have much brilliance. Case in point: It takes him a while to realize that the bright, colorful suburban town of Neighborville is being invaded by zombies. But along with Patrice, the niece of Neighborville’s eccentric inventor Crazy Dave, Nate and the town’s plants may be the town’s best hope for surviving the never-ending onslaught of the undead.
Like video games, Plants vs. Zombies: Lawnmageddon, a family-friendly take on the zombie apocalypse, doesn’t have much logic or plot. Plants and other elements from the original tower defense games seem to be thrown in almost randomly, and it’s not until much further into the comic that a proper threat appears for the protagonists to focus on defeating.
Still, it’s all good fun and, despite the presence of zombies, definitely suitable for all ages. The characters don’t feel any danger from the undead, and I can’t recall any scenes where plants are eaten by zombies.
The artwork is great and does a great job of bringing the video game characters to the page. The original characters also fit perfectly with the characters that appear in the game, and everything is very colorful and action-packed.
I think it’s probably best suited for younger fans of this game. Will it get better from here? Well, there are a hell of a lot more volumes to follow this one, but you’ll soon find out considering I bought them all digitally as part of the Humble Bundle offering earlier this year.
