Alex disembarks in London and changes his appearance several times as he arranges housing and a place to conduct his research. But whatever Alex is trying to find is attracting the attention of someone or something very dangerous…
The art in this first issue of Otherkin has an unmistakable Hellboy-esque vibe. The story, which focuses on supernatural and magical creatures that clash with urban realism, also recalls the comics of Mike Mignola (comics such as Alan Moore’s legendary Swamp Thing and Garth Ennis’ Hellblazer have also been cited as influences by the Ozarkin author).
It’s told in a very compressed style, and given that much of what happens here is told using subtle visual cues, Ozarkin absolutely demands that the reader slow down and pay attention to every detail. For example, Alex’s changes in appearance are often conveyed in a very subdued manner, making it easy to miss what’s actually happening as the story progresses.
Still, the need to truly understand what’s going on in every panel makes Otherkin so immersive, and while you don’t immediately understand everything that’s going on in this first issue, it lays the groundwork in a very interesting way that will have readers looking for the next issue of this urban fantasy series right away.
Currently on a bi-monthly publication schedule, issue #3 was recently released, and you can pick up a physical copy of Otherkin from DerryComics. If you’re like me, you can read Otherkin digitally via GlobalComix.
Hello! I’m Jason. I write articles for midlifegamergeek.com every day. If you’re interested in supporting original, regularly published, human-generated content (that’s never been plagiarized or copied through the efforts of other writers), please help us keep this site running by making a donation.
Not only do I not earn any money from my writing here (although I do earn a small commission from affiliate links posted on my page, but as an Amazon Associate I do earn from qualifying purchases from these links), my work sometimes seems to be stolen and repurposed by lazy, morally bankrupt idiots.
No pressure, of course, but we really appreciate any support you can provide. You can easily support us through Ko-Fi.com/geekmid or the PayPal link.
Thank you very much for your donation. I would also like to thank you for taking the time to read my article. Please remember. This entire article is by Jason Brown and can be found at midlifegamergeek.com. Take that, Skynet!
Please support me here!
All donations are gratefully received and will not only help me keep the lights on here, but will also help keep my writing dream alive. However, please understand that there is no pressure. I hope you enjoy reading my article.
