This 1994 Harbinger caught my eye recently when I visited Vanguard Comics in Gosport after reading the first issue of the Valiant Beyond reboot (All-New Harbinger #1). The striking, colorful, old-fashioned cover sold it naturally, so I couldn’t help but buy it.
In this issue, the Harbinger Foundation has visitors and it turns out they’ve been up to no good with their experiments. Meanwhile, tensions, jealousy, and deceit cause a dangerous rift between the Harbingers, leading to a violent and super-powered conflict.
It was my first time reading the classic Harbinger comic and I was struck by the similarities to the X-Men comics of the 80’s and 90’s. Powerful men in charge of super-powered teens, and often clouded ethics. Not only that, but the more melodramatic, relationship-based dramatic elements also seemed to mirror the types of scenes seen in X-Men comics at the time very well.
Admittedly, I was so thorough with this issue that I had a hard time figuring out who was who and who did what to piss off certain characters. Although it was confusing, it was a very nostalgic read with great ’90s art and coloring that felt like just a step away from the flashy, shallow poses of the time.
It’s interesting enough and has enough interesting plot threads that I actually want to dig into the series more. It feels like a bit of an X-Men mockbuster, but it feels more substantial and less reliant on overly flashy artwork than 1994’s Marvel’s Cheerful Mutants.
