The first issue of the Godzilla 2025 series was a fun but somewhat busy mix of character introductions and world-building. That said, it was serving as the starting point for IDW’s new Godzilla shared universe line known as the Kai-sei Era, so quite a lot of groundwork had to be laid.
In this second issue, the aftermath of Anguirus’ mission leads to horrifying discoveries and a reckless plan that seems destined to cause even more havoc. A dark force is approaching behind them, and not everyone is completely on the side of the anti-monster team G-Force…
The more plot-driven events of Godzilla #2 make for a more satisfying read, as the necessary backstory and current situation is covered in the first issue. Things still move at a fair pace here, and it’s a wise decision to focus on the human characters on the ground, with the constant threat of monsters in the background.
It’s also very interesting to see how other countries, especially Japan, are trying to deal with the monster threat. Of course, it makes sense that the United States, with its highly patriotic commanders, would take an ultra-militaristic approach.
The introduction to a new human faction here is surprising but very welcome, adding even more flavor to the dangers the characters face on their never-ending mission.
So far, Kai-sei Era has been very good, and there’s a surprising variety of comics on offer so far. As a lifelong Godzilla fan who isn’t always crazy about Godzilla being treated to the big screen, these comics scratch the kaiju itch in just the right way. We’ll be covering this in more detail in the coming weeks and months.
