To kick off the new year, Oni Press is releasing the complete version of The Truth, a romantic comedy road trip saga written by Iolanda Zanfardino and illustrated by Elisa Romboli. Ahead of the book’s release in January, The Beat offers an exclusive sneak peek at one of the scenes.

A Thing Called Truth follows a dedicated scientist, Dr. Magdalene Trauma, and a willing nomad, Dorian Wildfang, on a mission to travel across Europe. Their journey proves that opposites attract as unexpected romantic feelings spark between them.

This new volume includes all 10 chapters of the comic, and for the first time, chapters 6 through 10 will be sold in stores after previously being available only on Kickstarter.

Check out a special sneak peek below. Content Warning: In this excerpt, a secondary character is verbally homophobic towards Magdalene and Dorian.

Here is the complete synopsis of the book:

Embark on a chaotic LGBTQ+ road trip adventure with a workaholic scientist and a fearless thrill-seeker on a mission to honor the past and live in the present in Truth, a creator-owned romantic comedy collaboration from Iolanda Zanfardino (Midnight Radio) and Elisa Lomboli (Alice in Leatherland).

Dr. Magdalene Trauma, a brilliant scientist with a noble dream of saving the world, meets Dorian Wildfang, a free-spirited wanderer who is not afraid of anything. . . Except for her own fate. Together they embark on wild adventures across Europe, chasing a mission that proves that life is about the journey, not the destination. These seemingly opposite friends navigate the complexities of self-discovery and the challenges of a world on the brink of chaos, while finding common ground that sparks an unexpected romance along their journey.

In announcing the volume, Zanfardino said, “A Thing Called Truth is a story full of love: the love of movies, the wind in your hair, a new city you haven’t yet explored, and the brave fire in the eyes of a woman who is finding herself again. It’s about finding the balance between being fully committed to your goals and enjoying life without regrets. It’s a soul-searching story about the dream of leaving your mark on the world. It’s about why you want to go far, and what brings you home. You can’t run forever, but knowing you’re no longer alone makes it easier to face the world.”

A Thing Called Truth will be available everywhere books are sold on January 6, 2026.
