boom! The studio is double obligation this year to provide free Comic Book Day. Boom, a 20th anniversary sampler! It also releases Power Rangers/VR Troopers FCBD Special #1. These comics feature a “flipbook” with a story centered around a Power Ranger and another story focused on troopers. All you had to do was turn the book over.
That’s just worthy of that boom! We’re back to this format as Power Rangers Prime incorporated VR troopers into the story. Both stories are also based on previous events in Prime, as VR Troopers Story offers a different moment from Power Rangers Prime #1, and Power Rangers’ stories focus on the Power Rangers story, where Douby, the corgi adopted by Prime Rangers Mark and Orion.
The Power Rangers story wasn’t what I expected, but it’s surprisingly heartwarming, especially since it happens mostly from a Deubie perspective. His former owner had to let him go, so he led to Mark and Orion. Through all this, one single sentence runs through his head: “Stay; brave.” It’s a testament to Melissa Flores’ talent, and while she can focus the story around the puppy and make it compelling, Trish Forstner and Joanna Raffente make Douby look extremely adorable. In fact, their art style is sometimes very reminiscent of Don Bruce’s films!

As for the story of the VR Troopers, we dig a bit deeper into the dynamics between troopers Ryan, JB and Caitlyn, and how Power Rangers act as public heroes, in contrast to the power rangers who are hunted and feared. What I like about this story is that Mairghread Scott and the creative team of Sebastián Piriz continues their threads from Power Rangers Prime and do not cast the troopers as villains. They really protect the world in their own way, but the ending hints that the world may have a rude awakening for them may be awakening to the store for them.
The story also moves at a steady pace. Scott’s script begins with a literal bang, with a short, but bad fight sequence between a group of troopers and thieves. She also knows how to keep the story hanging enough for people to pick up the upcoming VR Troopers miniseries. Thanks to Piriz’s artwork, the fight was wonderfully brought to life. Not only does he perfectly replicate the appearance of the Troopers’ armor, but his work is clean and easy to follow.

Each story also includes a seat designed by Danmora, which outlines the differences between the Rangers and the Troopers. The Rangers suits are refined and feature helmets modeled after dinosaurs that empower them, but the troopers look more like what you’ll find in Robocop. Many fans may know Mora from his work in Batman/Superman: World’s finest and Unlimited Justice League, but he has begun working on the Power Rangers.
Power Ranger/VR Trooper FCBD Special #1 will double the story and double the action, making it a great entry point for Power Rangers Prime. It’s a comic I definitely recommend to newcomers and fellow 90’s kids.
