Acclaimed painter and former comic artist Aron Wiesenfeld took a bold new step with Playtime: The Post-It Note Drawings, Playtime: The Post-It Note Drawings, a 120-page deluxe hardcover art book. Wiesenfeld’s latest project is known for his inspiring oil paintings and charcoal works that blend classic techniques with modern melancholy.
The book features around 100 of these impressive miniature sketches, and is known for Wiesenfeld, accompanied by short writings and poetry that deepen the dreamy atmosphere. “I’m thinking of these little pictures like short stories,” he says. “They are based on the inspiration I found in my daily life. My hope is that you can browse it on a rainy day and also inspire it.”
Wiesenfeld fans include Guillermo Del Toro, Mike Mignola, Jim Lee and Kevin Eastman. This is an impressive list of artists’ wide creative influences. Wiesenfeld made waves in comics long before his art career, winning Eisner nominations for his work at Deathbrough/Wolverine, delivering an unforgettable cover of Y: The Last Man.
His gallery works have been exhibited worldwide on over 15 solo shows, but playtime shows a return to the continuous, intimate nature of storytelling. To match the tone of his larger work, Post-it drawings explore themes of loneliness, transformation, and the vulnerable boundaries of youth and adulthood. His young subjects, often placed on the neglected edge of the modern world, exist in a “middle” state.
The Kickstarter campaign offers supporters the unusual opportunity to own a look curated within the artist’s creative sketchbook. Whether you’re a long-time follower of Wiesenfeld’s fine art or a comic fan drawn to his unforgettable early work, Playtime promises a quietly powerful experience that will last a long time after the final page.
