There’s one more, as retrospective reviews of deep space cartoons from the early 90s prove to be popular!
We are working on the fourth issue, and the first part of the second story is called Liberation. On the runabout’s daily mission, Dr. Bashir and Jazia Dachshunds are captured by a strange ship. The strange ship is found to be home to alien slaves who escaped from captivity. Returning to Deep Space Nine with the Doctor and Dachshunds, it is not long before their trackers appear to demand that their “cargo” be returned to them. Sisko invites slaves on board, wanting to operate within Starfleet rules, and the situation becomes complicated and fatal.
This is a strange problem. It appears there is a rather obvious moral attitude the Deep Space Nine crew should take. Maybe I’m missing something, but seeing how slaves were treated, there was a question that no matter how complicated their kind of politics was, they would help the oppressors. Apparently.
This time, I felt a little uncomfortable with the art. The alien design is very clear considering the cast of Deep Space Nine refers to the photos so clearly that artist Gordon Purcell has no other mention of what he does to work with when bringing it to life, It looked like a cartoon.
Still, I think it’s entertaining enough, but it certainly doesn’t reach the standard for the particularly powerful first three issues of the Malibu comic series.
