The mysterious object Alex Campbell finds isn’t just any flashy, shiny relic: An ancient white supremacist organization is pursuing her, and they’ll stop at nothing to get their hands on it.
What do they want it for? What are their plans? And what does Alex’s ancestor have to do with all this?
Like Quantum Tangle, which brings together the first two chapters of volume one of author Henry Sherburne’s The Panharmonion Chronicles, Synchronic Velocity (featuring chapters three and four from volume one) has a very dense, layered story.
The work is blessed with a vivid sense of place and time, and London in particular is depicted in amazing detail; being able to recognise actual real-world locations when mentioned in the footage or dialogue was particularly exciting for this particular reader (I grew up in and around London, so maybe I have a bit of an unfair advantage in recognising the landmarks in the story!).
The flashbacks are deliberately anachronistic and don’t have the same level of accuracy, but that’s of course intentional – Stephen Baskerville’s art is detailed and incredibly realistic – even the aforementioned journey to an alternate past feels authentic.
One thing I have to say is that I found the story a little hard to follow at times, the same was true in part 1. I suspected it was because there was too much set-up, but clearly a lot more explanation and detail was needed to tell this dense and fairly layered story.
One thing is for sure: this is a beautifully put together, unique story that draws from a variety of sources and genres, with some excellent social commentary at the forefront, and is unlike most I have read before, and definitely one to be celebrated.
If you can’t find The Panharmonion Chronicles: Times of London at your local comic book store, you can purchase it direct from the publisher here.
Many thanks to Henry Chebaane for sending me a digital copy of Volume 1 of The Panharmonion Chronicles: Times of London for review. Stay tuned for my review of the next chapter coming soon!
