A 1993 comic written by Star Trek’s Walter Koenig? When I saw this comic advertised in one of the many Malibu comics I’ve been picking up and reading lately, I was very interested. I was intrigued. And considering how cheap and widely available these comics are right now (the benefit of waiting until the market crashes is that it’ll be another few decades before people really lose interest), it’s hard to get your hands on one. was neither expensive nor difficult.
I’ve actually been really impressed with Malibu’s work, which I’ve been catching up on recently, so I was really looking forward to reading Raver #1, despite the slightly awkward title.
It pains me to say this, but there was no need to worry. I don’t even understand what happened in the manga because it’s told in a really clumsy and clumsy way. Koenig’s script seems to be aiming for mystery and surrealism, with just the right amount of philosophical points thrown in out of nowhere.
It starts with a guy trying to give a presentation to a class of misbehaving kids, some of whom are real shit… then there’s a guy in a superhero costume (see cover), but so It’s not entirely clear who he is, why he’s there, what happened in class, and it’s a mix of really weird, seemingly unrelated shit. And then the ending comes out of nowhere and begins with a mean little tirade of a kid threatening to hurt a couple of kittens unless another kid comes down from a tree and takes a punch.
Normally I don’t go into this much detail about comics. Because I think it’s better to provide a brief synopsis in case anyone reading wants to figure it out for themselves. However, I don’t think that matters in the slightest here.
None of it made sense or seemed to have any purpose or coherence to it all, and I was very confused, so to make sure I hadn’t missed any obvious points or anything else, I decided to first I had to try to find other reviews online. Clever subtext.
No, every review I found said that they were incredibly perplexed by what they read, which was such a relief.
Anyway, in the cover photo I took, I tried to express how shiny and impressive the foil treatment is. This is better than what you can find inside and I’m never going to bother reading any more issues.
Seeing the wonderful Mr. Koenig’s name in the comic piqued my curiosity, but before I took the plunge to read this work, I should have remembered what my curiosity did to the cat.
