Indie developer Gardenfiend Games has released a beautiful plant-horror game that the team describes as “Hollow Knight meets Titan Souls.” Releasing on September 6th for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S, Perennial Order is a 2D boss rush game inspired by the art styles of Dark Souls, Princess Mononoke, and Magic: The Gathering. You play as an undead knight with a pitcher plant head (or maybe a helmet), a needle grafted onto one arm, and a hostile world teeming with plant-infested monsters. Needless to say, I downloaded it immediately.
Perennial Order can be played solo or with friends. Both local and online co-op are on offer, with cross-platform support. With 15 bosses to face off against, your every move counts in one-hit kill combat. Thankfully, you’ll respawn near where you died, which some enemies will probably do a lot.
I played a bit of Perennial Order this weekend and it is truly mesmerizing. The environments and music are beautiful, creating a wonderfully bleak atmosphere as you explore between boss fights and piece together the lore through interactions with chatty NPCs. I love a good plant-horror and Perennial Order does not disappoint.
