Panic Hit paused on Playdate Stereo Dock, says it’s not likely to be seen anytime soon

The long-promised Playdate Stereo Dock is officially retired, at least for now. After months of a desktop accessory stalled in development, Panic has updated the product page to no longer say “coming soon,” but instead to indicate that there are issues with the Bluetooth experience and that the factory that made it is no longer available. It said it was suspended on deadline. That, and the increased cost of resolving it all. First announced in 2021, the Stereo Dock was meant to be a charging dock that doubles as a Bluetooth speaker (and pen holder), as well as a cute way to display your Playdate when it’s not in use. However, things did not go as planned.

The Playdate team ran into some unexpected hurdles in bringing this idea to fruition, stating that it turned out to be “almost more difficult to make the stereo dock than it was to make the Playdate itself.” The statement explains:

what happened? Well, my first regret was that I thought it would be easy to design electronics in the factory at the time (the one that made a lot of Bluetooth speakers) and save me a lot of time and money. Things went pretty well at first. However, they outsourced the Bluetooth software and chipset to another company in another country.

As a result, the stereo dock would crash frequently and would crash when I adjusted the volume too quickly. Bluetooth pairing/unpairing was sloppy. When I tried playing music, it didn’t sound very good. The back and forth between the three companies trying to fix the bug became a major challenge. And worst of all, stereo docks kept getting more and more expensive.

Additionally, the team says they have tried to improve the experience and even purchased Bluetooth chipset source code to resolve the issue, but to no avail. Although there are “a lot of beautifully finished prototypes,” Panik says, “they just weren’t very usable.” This official update was heralded in a social media exchange shared on Reddit earlier this month, in which Panic’s Kabel Sasser responded to a question about the Stereo Dock situation, writing, “Incredibly stupid. It turned out to be incredibly difficult for a number of reasons.” Pause.

The team says it is now fully focused back on the continued production of Playdate. There may still be a chance we’ll see a stereo dock at some point in the future, but don’t hold your breath. “Will it ever arrive? We still hope so,” Panik said. “Will it arrive soon? Not likely.”
