There have been rumors for some time that Pocketpair is planning to bring one of its biggest games of the year, Palworld, to the PlayStation 5. However, it came as a bit of a surprise to learn during Sony’s State of Play stream that the action-adventure game is available on the console starting today.
Palworld (often described as “Pokemon with guns”) arrived in Early Access on Xbox and PC in January and was an instant hit, selling over 1 million copies in just eight hours. Within a month, it had surpassed 25 million players. According to Microsoft, it was the biggest debut ever for a third-party title on Game Pass.
However, it soon became clear that The Pokémon Company was investigating Palworld, and eight months later, the company and Nintendo filed a lawsuit against Pocket Pair.
“The lawsuit alleges that the game Palworld, developed and published by the defendants, infringes multiple patents and seeks an injunction and damages,” Nintendo said after filing the lawsuit last week. Pocket Pair’s CEO said the game has “cleared legal scrutiny” and that the company will “initiate appropriate legal proceedings and investigations into the alleged patent infringement.”
So Palworld’s arrival on PS5 isn’t exactly ideal timing, but if you’re willing to buy a game that could be forced out of existence in the months or years to come due to a lawsuit, you can buy it on PlayStation.
