Ta-Nehisi Coates, the bestselling author of World, Me and Messages in the New York Times, provided his unique voice and perspective to the Black Panther world that begins in 2016. It received rave reviews from both fans and critics, setting the stage for the future of T’Challa and Wakanda countries. The first major arc of Coates’ Black Panther Run is entitled “Nation at Our Foot”, and focuses on T’Challa and his supporters, who scream some anti-original rebellions within Wakanda. I guessed it and ended up creating Wakanda’s first republic.
For the first time, Black Panther: The nation under our feet is collected in the form of paperbacks. The inventive series is given the honor of being one of Marvel’s first four Marvel Premier Collection books. Coates’ brilliant, thought-provoking and lore work has been reviewed over and over again (spoiler: amazing). This review will focus on the experience of the Premier Collection. But I don’t want to ignore the artistic contributions of artists whose artwork in this series are truly amazing: Brian Stellfries, Chris Sprouse and Laura Martin.
Amazing
Marvel’s new premier collection is designed to provide an easy and accessible entry point to the iconic Marvel franchise, and Coates’ Black Panther Run is a great choice for this purpose. The series not only offers Black Panther and Wakanda’s “soft renewals” but also sets up full storytelling for the next few years, giving readers a great entry into T’Challa’s ongoing trials and tribulations Masu. That being said, the great premise of our nation at our feet is the rage of the people of Wakandan and the disappointment of how T’Challa ruled the country. Most of this (very reasonable) rage is the mention that T’Challa is the treatment of Namor, Thanos, and the destruction of Wakanda’s Black Order, which new readers can’t understand.
My husband thoroughly enjoyed reading this collection, so I can actually prove the Marvel Premier Collection as an entry point for the Marvel franchise. He has never read the Black Panther comic before and is currently interested in reading Coates’ next Black Panther Ark, the Intergalactic Empire of Wakanda.
Amazing
Well, in short, the absolute gorgeous physical book itself. I love the black and red designs from the Marvel Premier Collection. It definitely feels “special”. The covers are soft and the pages are printed on matte paper instead of shiny paper, making the collection feel more like a “book” than a cartoon. One of my complaints about this trade paperback (also raised my husband) is that the binding was so tight that I had to almost break my spine to read some of the dialogue at the far end of the page is. I’m disappointed enough to remove .5 from my rating, but not enough to seriously hurt my experience reading the collection!
In addition to the beautiful presentation of the comic and the content of the series itself, this Marvel Premier collection contains perhaps the most covers I have ever seen in the paperback collection. Not only is there a full-size cover before every issue of the entire collection, but the back of the book contains an array of full-size and small variant covers, a beautiful display of Marvel’s diverse artistic portfolio . The collection also includes interviews between Coates and Ryan Coogler, writer and director of MCU’s Black Panther, and a bunch of “process” pages on comic creation. Additionally, the collection features a lovely introduction by rapper and activist Killer Mike, a great way to start the series.
For those who are fans of Black Panther and want or are looking for a professional feel collection that is not a massive omnibus, from the imprint of the new Marvel Premier Collection, Black Panther at our feet: Enter our feet nation highly recommend modern black panther comics. While the writing of Ta-Nehisi Coates is breathtaking thrilling, the art of Stelfreeze and Sprouse is exemplary. Although this binding makes reading several sections difficult, the overall physicality of the book deserves its one flaw and makes it a beautiful addition to your own cartoon collection.
