Tom Jung’s iconic Star Wars A New Hope painting was sold by Heritage Auctions last Wednesday for $3.875 million. This artwork was used as key art on half-sheet posters that appeared in newspapers, magazine ads, and billboard ads in 1977 during the film’s original release. For many Americans, this was their first look at the Star Wars series. Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope (TCF, 1977), historic half-sheet key poster artwork by Tom John. “For most people in America, this was the first glimpse of a galaxy far, far away,” said Charles Epting, head of pop culture and historical consignments at Heritage Auctions.

This stunning historic acrylic and paintbrush piece comes from the collection of the late Star Wars producer Gary Kurtz and will be on public display for the first time. The painting was used in several important promotional pieces, including the original theatrical program available for purchase in May 1977, and is a cornerstone of the Star Wars universe.

Melissa Kurtz, daughter of producer Gary Kurtz, added, “It was an honor to have this wonderful picture with us for so many years.” “This is a warm reminder of the incredible experience of being part of the making of a film that touched the lives of so many people.”
“These aren’t just movie artifacts; they’re part of our collective imagination,” says Joe Maddalena, executive vice president of Heritage Auctions. “Each piece represents a moment when storytelling and artistry collided to create magic. We are excited to bring these icons to fans, collectors and organizations who understand their importance and will preserve their legacy for generations to come.”
