In the spring of 2026, Maia Kobabe (E/Em/Eir) and Lucky Srikumar (They/Them) will opt out and be published by Scholastic. The graphic novel tells the story of a seventh grader’s search, facing several challenges as adolescents arrive.

Today, Comics Beat is proud to unveil the cover of the opt-out designed by Maddy Price. You can view your cover by scrolling to the bottom of this article.

Opt out

This explains how you opt out of the publisher.

“My body is the worst. I wish I hadn’t.

“Saachi is a narrator. At school, she is surrounded by children she is known forever. Her best friend, Laila, shares her love for fantasy novels and the creation of a new world.

“But when the seventh grade begins, the kids change. It’s important if you can suddenly find someone you like, a boyfriend or girlfriend. Even Lila seems interested in writing and drawing with her new boyfriend or drawing.

“Saach doesn’t love all the ways her body is changing. What if she doesn’t feel like a girl or a boy?

Kobabe is the award-winning author/illustrator behind Gender Queer, previously collaborating with Sarah Peitzmeier, PhD On Breathe: Hourneys to Healthy Binding. Opt out and Kobabe is working with newcomer Srikumar.

The opt-out is scheduled to be released on May 5, 2025. Books can now be reserved through Amazon, Barnes & Noble and BookShop.com. Do you pick up a copy of your opt-out when you arrive in the spring? Please let us know the beat in the comments here or on social media.
