Oni Press has announced a new middle grade graphic novel by award-winning artist Guilherme Petreca and children’s TV author Mirtes Santana that will debut next spring. Superpunk, The Beat can exclusively reveal the first look.
Superpunk follows Violeta, a 13-year-old podcaster and skateboarder who gains punk rock superpowers after committing what appears to be a small act of rebellion. This unleashes a horde of monsters on her town, forcing her to gain new powers and lead them to save everyone she loves.
Here is the full synopsis:
Violeta discovers her grandfather’s old cassette player and decides to play the cassette tapes backwards. (Why? It’s pure punk rebellion, duh!) What she didn’t know was that this act of rebellion would give her magical powers! Oh, and. . . Unleash the monster. There are many. With the help of her loyal sidekick and fellow podcaster Alan, Violeta must use her newfound superpowers to protect her hometown of Hollow Hills. But between homework, podcasting, and skateboarding, Violeta struggles to keep up with everything. When a horde of monsters attacks her school, will this superpunk be able to save the day?
“We wanted to make a comic that felt like a punk mixtape. We wanted to make a comic that was loud, heartfelt, and carried you to the last beat,” Santana said. “Superpunk is a love letter to those who blasted loud songs, skipped their skating homework, and held on to the fearless hope of being young and punk.”
Petraca said, “When monsters cause trouble in town, it’s only one power trio who can save the day. Pick up your cassette player, put on your superhero mask, and get ready to turn up the volume. Superpunk is here!”

“Beyond the Powerpuff Girls and Kim Possible, Violeta is here to bring a cool skater girl edge to a new generation of girl heroes,” said Grace Scheipeter, senior editor at Oni Press. “We’re so excited for readers to step into this action-packed world of battle, where retro meets punk and bands like Bikini Kill, the Ramones, and the Pixies provide the world-saving soundtrack.”
In May 2026, Superpunk will be available everywhere books are sold.
