Murder Drones, Oni Press’ comic adaptation of the fan-favorite animated series, has raised nearly $1.7 million on Kickstarter, making it one of the top five highest-grossing comics in the crowdfunding platform’s history.
Murder Drones earned $1,694,542, taking the No. 4 spot on Kickstarter’s highest-grossing comics campaign of all time. Beyond that, only Skybound’s Transformers and G.I. Joe compilations ($4.65 million and $3.79 million, respectively) and the Terry Pratchett Estate’s graphic novel Good Omens (£2,419,973). Murder Drones’ original fundraising goal of $5,000 was met within the first five minutes of the campaign.
The graphic novel by author Wyatt Kennedy and illustrator Mi-kyung Cho is the most successful campaign to date for Oni Press, which previously released comics based on Rick and Morty and Cult of the Sheep that were raised on Kickstarter.
“I think it’s going to mean a lot to people who love physical media to actually own the stories they love, told with such care and respect for the original,” Kennedy told The Beat in September. “I also think this is a great path that could open the door to further stories and explorations of this universe in the future.”
The 136-page graphic novel is scheduled to be released on the direct-to-consumer market in 2026. In addition to several different formats for the book, Murder Drones offered backers the opportunity to obtain perks such as a jacket, pin, and even an official VHS release of the show. The Murder Drones graphic novel will ship in about a year, but before that, single issues will begin hitting comic shops in February.
Murder Drones is the product of Glitch Productions, the studio behind the blockbuster hit The Amazing Digital Circus. Although both series were independently funded and produced, they garnered enough fan support that Murder Drones is currently streaming on Prime Video and The Amazing Digital Circus is available on Netflix after its initial YouTube upload.
Oni describes Murder Drone as follows: “In the distant future, a natural disaster has caused humanity’s remotely mined exoplanet Copper 9 to snap freeze. Only now, at the end of its lifespan, are human-created ‘worker drones’ having to rebuild society from the frozen ashes… This effort is complicated by the arrival of ‘demolition drones’, vampire robot counterparts hellbent on wiping out mechanical lifeforms. Threats from the planet and the unexpected appearance of a sinister being known as the Absolute Solver. ”
Murder Drones began with eight episodes in 2021 and ended in 2024. The show moved to Prime Video in May 2025.
