Purchased on July 9th, this week’s top comics have one of my favorite books, with new #1 and comics returning with a new miniseries. The book is under a tree that no one sees: the ritual of Spring #1, and I was really blown away by it. I’ll review it in a complete comic column tomorrow Wednesday. I’ll explain in detail why I liked it so much. But this isn’t: if you like the first series, this is definitely something you should read.
Elsewhere, this week there will be a powerful new Batman and Superman comic, a huge swing from bad ideas, and more. You can find my 5 favorite comics of the week along with the regular sets on other release lists… Enjoy!
Top Comics to Buy on July 9, 2025
Batman – Dark Pattern #8
Author: Dan Watters
Artist: Haydenshaman
Colorist: Triona Farrell
Letter: Frank Kvetkovich
Publisher: DC Comics
Case 03: A vigilance investigation into the murder of the Red Hood gang in Rookery in Palayra Batman places him on a collision course at the heart of the latest mystery that promotes the order of Gotham City.
Why it’s cool: This third case of Gothic brooding detective Batman advances this issue with an absolutely perfect twist. The issue also features bold cartoons from the teams of Hayden Sherman and Triona Farrell. Essentially, anything that has created a dark pattern is one of the best bat books in the very good line of Batman comics today.
Price: $4.99
Under the Tree No One Sees: Spring Ritual #1
Author/Artist: Patrick Horvath
Letter: Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou
Publisher: IDW Publishing
It has been eight years since a bloody brown bear ran down the city, lured a kind young duck, dissected its bodies, and buried debris in the forest. The Duck’s family sought justice painstakingly…but this brown bear was clever… she covered the truck…and in the 80s, there was no way for the duck family to find the answer. But it’s not the 80s anymore. Almost a decade after Samantha, a cute brown bear, has solidified as Woodbrook’s only serial killer, and the world is entering a new era. As Samantha will quickly discover, there are no secrets in the age of the internet. And those who have lost loved ones to her massacre have not given up on the flames of justice. The calculations are coming to Woodbrook.
Why is it cool: I really can’t say enough good things about this comic’s revival. As much as I liked the first volume (and I really liked it), this first issue has some story decisions. This is a rare comic that brings us into a world of narratives wrapped in a rather satisfying way and can convince us that there is more to explore here from the start. Something great, and I can’t wait any longer.

FML #5
Author: Kelly Sue Deconic
Artist: David Lopez
Colorist: Cris Peter
Letter: Clayton Cowles
Publisher: Dark Horse
When Riley and his band become schoolyard pariahs accused of murder, their daily lives turn into a strange blend of fear and isolation. School principals are proposing remote learning “to avoid confusion” than ever before. Determined to clear their names, the gang eventually joins forces with crying and crime women, diving into the dark depths of the dark web and the evil deeds of the past. Meanwhile, walking the dog with his dad takes his nose away when Riley discovers another body, this time in a sinkhole. It’s another Tuesday in Portland to queue Burner’s phone secret purchases anonymously report body. Back at home, a mother’s revelation about her imaginary magical friend sends a shockwave through the group, only hidden by Amy’s bomb confession about her past with Kat. In the enchanting silence that follows, the phone rings: Riley is arrested and charged with murder. FML.
Why it’s cool: Friends, at this point, I stopped trying to deal intellectually with why FML works so well. Is it part of a murder mystery? Is it a paper on true crime? Are you a riff from your personal experience of raising a family? Is it an artist’s Ode to raising children in the city? yes. yes. yes. And yes. But, in addition, it’s a very well-made comic that uses the media in a number of different levels. This was to easily pick a list of the top comics of the week to buy on July 9th.

Planet Death #1
Authors: Derek Kolstad and Robert Venditti
Artist: Tomas Giorello
Colorist: Sunny Go
Letter: Tom Napolitano
Publisher: Bad Thoughts
Millions of miles from your home, hundreds of ships descend into the stormy atmosphere of a hostile, frozen world. On board, a decisive army of men and women is brace for the coming attack. They are an invasion force on an impossible mission. Destroy weapons that have been devastating enemy weapons parked below. Chief Scott Corp and his battalion are pioneers, but the human army is not comparable to the cruel foreign enemies. Scott’s battalion dies at an instant. He is the only survivor of it. The landing forces disappear and the battle is lost. Contrary to the overwhelming odds, Scott dares to think – cross the back of enemy lines, survive deadly landscapes, avoid capture by ruthless enemies, resist natural predators, face human escapees, and end missions on their own. Confined in a suit of full combat battle armor supported only by what he can carry, Scott has to do on his own what the whole army couldn’t do. Destroy the weapon. Go home.
Why it’s cool: First and foremost, this book looks great. This is a relatively decompressed comic that is primarily traded at pieces moments of large action sets, giving all these sequences plenty of space to grow. It is also a seemingly simple concept. As I say from the beginning, here’s the point here: Destroy the weapon. Go home. I think the book co-writer is Derek Kolstad, the mastermind of John Wick. But yeah, this is the first problem of a great 48 page, and the first problem of a complete sci-fi that sets the stage for an epic story.

Superman Treasury 2025: All #1 heroes
Author: Dan Jurgens
Artist: Bruno Redondo
Ink Assist: Caio Filipe
Colorist: Adriano Lucas
Letter: Dave Sharp
Publisher: DC Comics
Steel Man grapples for Superman’s summer, and legends clash! In this all-new Treasury edition, typical Superman writer Dan Jurgens pairs up with Bruno Redondo, the master of modern sequential art, creating a larger story that features power, tragedy, action and, above all, more. When a vicious fleet of extraterrestrial extremists launches a full invasion of planet Earth, only Superman can prevent them from disappearing completely. But there’s something different about this attack. It’s a story, so in Titanic, I had to say in the size of the Treasury to celebrate the summer of Superman!
Why is it cool: Because this is Superman week. Unless you’ve been completely offline for years, you certainly know that the most deceased Superman film has arrived this weekend. That’s what we have here and it’s an explosion.
Price: $14.99
