Workers at the Apple Store at Penn Square Mall in Oklahoma City have voted to ratify their first collectively bargained contract. The store’s employees are affiliated with the Communications Workers of America, operating as Apple Retail Union-CWA Local 6016. According to a press release from the CWA, the three-year contract between employees and Apple includes:
“Wage increases of up to 11.5% over the next three years.”
“Workers are involved in scheduling and guaranteed paid time off to vote.”
“The establishment of grievance and arbitration procedures and a joint health, safety and labour relations committee will result in a safer and more democratic workplace.”
“Job security and severance pay in the event of store closure or relocation.”
“We guarantee paid vacation, health insurance and other benefits.”
Today’s news marks the culmination of years of preparation to unionize and secure a contract at the Apple Store at Penn Square Mall, with organizing beginning in early 2022. The parties reached a tentative agreement in early September after a unanimous strike authorization vote and store picketing in August.
The Oklahoma City employees are the second group of Apple retail workers to secure a contract through a union. An Apple store in Maryland was the tech company’s first retail store to unionize, joining the International Union of Machinists and Aerospace Workers in June 2022.
