It’s no exaggeration that IDW is heavily promoting Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #13, which opens up a new era for our half-shell heroes under the new creative team of writer Gene Luen Yang and artist Freddie E. Williams II. Today, the publisher announced that TMNT #13 has received over 100,000 orders.

The news was announced the day after yesterday’s pre-order deadline, as sales forecasts exceeded expectations and printers needed extra time to produce more copies to meet increased demand.

Next week sees the release of TMNT #12, the final issue from the current creative team of writer Jason Aaron and artist Juan Ferreya, and it’s guaranteed to be another highly sought-after issue.

Check out the official press release below and the newly released variant cover for Kevin Eastman TMNT #13.

From original co-creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird to the more recent hit duo of Jason Aaron and Juan Ferreira, the TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES (TMNT) comic book has an impressive legacy of innovative and exciting writers and artists. IDW Publishing’s signature TMNT comic series now welcomes a whole new level of turtle power with the long-awaited arrival of a thrilling new creative team.

Multiple Eisner Award-winning author Gene Luen Yang and blockbuster artist Freddie E. Williams II jump into the best-selling comic series with this December’s TMNT #13, bringing in Technodrome-sized sales from fans and comic book retailers, with over 100,000 copies ordered.

“Like everyone else who grew up in the ’80s, I’ve been a fan of the Turtles since I was a kid. The Turtles introduced me to the world of comics through Zerik Grant, so I’m really excited to jump into their world,” Yang said in a statement. “Freddie and I are so grateful for the support TMNT #13 has received from retailers and fans. We can’t wait for the world to see what we have planned!”

“Painting as a regular TMNT artist is the culmination of 30 years, playing the TMNT role-playing game, zigzagging through comic book crossovers for 10 years, and having the honor of collaborating with my hero Kevin Eastman,” said Williams II. “I’m so excited to be here. I’m having a great time teaming up with Gene Yang. I hope everyone loves what we’re creating together!”

With a brand new storyline featuring the first appearance of the mysterious new villain Ujigami, and an all-star roster of cover artists celebrating in a blind bag, Yang and Williams II’s opening salvo has already received enthusiastic responses from critics who knew the big deal early on.

“Accessible to all readers (…) Brilliantly jumps from point to point without sacrificing what came before” – Nicole Drum, ComicBook.com “This new creative team is building something special” – Taimur Dar, The Beat “Nothing resonates more with the TMNT community than the arrival of TMNT #13” – Sean O’Connell, CBR “The Turtles are in good hands” – Alex Zalben, Comic Book Club The Turtles are timeless” – Sal Crivelli, ComicPop “A bold new chapter in TMNT comics” – David Brooke, AIPT

“When we heard Gene and Freddy were making a new start for our flagship TMNT series, we thought this was the perfect opportunity to commemorate their debut issue with a blind bag,” said IDW Sales Director Ryan Balcombe. “Listening to our retailers and fans is extremely important to us, which is why we’ve assembled an incredible roster of cover artists and made sure to keep these bags affordable for everyone. We’re extremely humbled by the overwhelming response to the launch of this new series, and we’re so grateful for all the support you’ve shown us. We can’t wait for you to get your hands on the comics this December.”

TMNT #13 will arrive in comic shops on December 10, 2025, with covers by Williams II and colorists Andrew Dalhouse, Kevin Eastman and Ben Bishop, Jared Cullum, Clayton Crane, Daniel Warren Johnson, Dustin Nguyen, David Nakayama, Nathan Zardi (Blind Bag Exclusive), and Raza (Blind Bag Exclusive).
