The moon is stuck in the midnight sky like a broken clock, and the sun is a distant memory. In this quiet seaside town, no one remembers how long this unnatural darkness lasted. That is, no one but 12-year-old Madeline Tock, a curious girl who lives in a cemetery and cares for the dead. In gratitude, the deceased whisper to her their concerns, like an overprotective but loving father. Be careful of this endless night and the girl who causes it.

Because there are other people who can hear those whispers. . . A person whose gown is a map of the universe, whose hair is a tangled constellation, and whose eyes are like the light of distant stars. Night mother. Her basic duty is to gather the souls of the dead into a lantern and send them to their eternal resting place as beautiful moonlight. But when a lust for power threatens to steal the souls of the living, Madeline bravely stands up to protect her town and her loved ones. Will Madeline be able to get the sun back, or will she be seduced by this mysterious woman’s starry promises?
