Next-generation Roomba Essential RoboVac features an automatic evacuation dock and doubles the suction power

It’s only been six months since iRobot launched its affordable Essential robot vacuum, but there are already two new models in the lineup. The Roomba Combo 2 Essential and Roomba Back 2 Essential have “double the cleaning power” than their predecessors and are the first in the series to feature an automatically emptying trash can.

The Roomba Combo 2 Essential ($425) combines vacuuming and mopping capabilities, while the Vac 2 Essential ($400) is a vacuum-only model for those without tile or hardwood floors. Both have 100% more suction power than the first Essential vacuum cleaner. The latter already had 20 times the suction power of the Roomba 600 series it replaced at the lower end of the iRobot product line.

Both machines have an auto-empty feature that spits dirt and debris into a self-sealing bag inside the docking station. The bag can hold stains for up to 60 days before needing to be replaced. The vacuum cleaner comes with four suction power levels, a multi-sided brush and an edge-sweep brush.

The Roomba Combo 2 Essential has the vacuuming capabilities of cheaper models but adds mopping with a three-stage water supply. At only $25 more than a vacuum-only model, this seems like the obvious choice unless your home is fully carpeted.

One thing the higher-end models don’t have is advanced navigation with LiDAR. Instead, budget models like this move in simple (yet effective) orderly columns.

The Roomba Combo 2 Essential is currently available for $425 in North America on iRobot’s website and at third-party retailers. The vacuum-only Vac 2 Essential costs $400 and is available at select retailers.
