Dark Horse Comics first announced at Star Wars artist The Manga, Star Wars Celebration 2025 that it is publishing the art of Star Wars, a deluxe book that introduces original and unprecedented artboards from Japanese manga artists.
In 1997, Tamaki embarked on an ambitious mission. George Lucas’s Space Opera, Star Wars: A meticulous recreation of new hope and boldly reinterprets iconic films through the unique lens of the manga. As a result, Tamaki has become an impressive and unforgettable adaptation, winning the prestigious Eisner Award for Best US Edition of Foreign Material.
Remembering the beginning of the project, Tamaki asked, “The editor (at the time…) who was in charge of the project, “Do you want to draw Star Wars?” And thinking it was zero, I replied, “Am I definitely a new hope?” I have to draw Star Wars. ”
Now, nearly 30 years later, Dark Horse Comics has partnered with Lucasfilm to launch its first Kickstarter campaign to order special editions of Star Wars Art: New Hopes – cartoons containing one collector variant that cannot be purchased at retail stores. Two beautifully crafted volumes are now available from Kickstarter. Each volume presents Tamaki’s original artwork, with brand new English translations, from his acclaimed cartoon adaptation of Star Wars: New Hope in 1997.
“This is the kind of Star Wars you’ve never seen,” said Dark Horse president, founder and CEO Mike Richardson. “We share the legendary Hisaotamaki comics with our fans in an edition that doesn’t showcase the art, but also does not have a glimpse into the creative process behind it.”
Today, The Beat is excited to share the exclusive publicity of Triptych Folio featuring Tamaki’s incredible art that can be purchased through the Kickstarter campaign.
