Recently, there have been questions on social media as to why there hasn’t been much buzz about EXCEPTIONAL X-MEN. Promotional efforts for this flagship title, which features illustrations by Carmen Carnero and writing by popular author Eve L. Ewing, have been surprisingly quiet over the past few months, especially for a promotion so conspicuous that it features the first Black woman writing a flagship X-title. But those concerns have been allayed as Marvel Comics has just released a brand new trailer for this exciting debut.
As for what makes the book “special,” Ewing said:
“Well, those of you who know I was a poet long before I was a comic book writer will understand that in a world filled with X-adjectives, the name EXCEPTIONAL X-MEN sounds absolutely fantastic. But as of now, they’re exceptional in that they don’t carry the same history as the main characters of our other titles. For better or worse, they have no connection to Krakoa, team politics, or previous mutant times. They’re just a group of awkward Midwestern kids trying to make sense of their powers, like the generations of young mutants before them.”
On that point, artist Carmen Carnero added:
“As for the young mutants, I think the whole team grew to love all three of them, and I love that they are polar opposites. Eve had a very clear personality, hobbies, musical tastes, emotions, etc. Then when it came to designing them, everything came naturally and the team all had a clear vision for what their final look should be. I can’t wait for readers to meet them.”
EXCEPTIONAL X-MEN #1 is in stores now and marks the third main title since the launch of From the Ashes. The trailer shows fan favorites Kitty Pryde and Emma Frost teaching the new mutants how to survive in a post-Krakoa world.
