Top Comics to Buy This Week for November 19th features new comics from some of my favorite singular creators: writer Grant Morrison and writer/artist Tom Scioli. Morrison is writing the DC version of the Batman/Deadpool crossover, while Scioli is writing his own Twilight Zone story. A completely different comic, but definitely the highlight of a strong week.
All five of my recommended single issues are listed below, along with a regular set of release lists. Enjoy!
Popular comics to buy on November 19th

What happens when the world’s greatest detective meets a mercenary with a mouth? Reality folds into itself. Archetypes collide. The dark side. And somewhere between Apokolips and Earth TRN666, a sentient street named Danny is humming a show song about the Cape of the Crusaders.
Why it’s cool: This is a Grant Morrison comic, but more than that, it’s a Grant Morrison comic where you get to see them. He’s collaborating again with A. Dan Mora (read “Klaus” if you haven’t already) and writing Deadpool, a character that plays with the self-aware metafiction that is so prominently incorporated into B. Morrison’s body of work. The results are as interesting as you think. Plus, the backstory is great.

High Strangeness #2 – 1975
Screenplay: Zach Thompson and Daniel Noah; Postscript: Timothy Renner
Artist: Noah Bailey
Author: Becca Carey
Publisher: Onipress
A prison transport bus crashes on a remote forest road in Washington State in the depths of winter, and the only survivor, inmate Elwood Krieger, runs into the woods. He encounters a mysterious creature and fights it off, only to realize that he has accidentally killed a young Sasquatch boy. Narrowly escaping the wrath of his grieving mother, Krieger begins a new secret life in a nearby community, hoping to live above the law. But when Krieger discovers that he and the woman in love, with whom he shares a mysterious telepathic relationship, Krieger faces a decision far more difficult than fight or flight. . .
Why it’s cool: This series is essentially a high-quality, prestige-style story about the indescribable weirdness that colors real life, at least for those who truly believe in such things. This is also an anthology series, so each issue introduces a new creator, and so far this series has not been missed. The second book, in which author Zach Thompson teams up with artist Noah Bailey to tell a Sasquatch story, easily made my list of top comics to buy for November 19th.

Fallen Lazarus #6
Screenplay: Greg Rucka
Artist: Michael Lark
Colorist: Santiago Arcas
Author: Ariana Maher
Publisher: Image Comics
When Malcolm returns Marisol to military service, Marisol is forced to make a deal with the devil. In the North African desert, Sonya Bittner and Forever Carlyle meet again… for the last time.
Why it’s cool: It’s no secret that Lazarus is one of my favorite ongoing comics in this area (if not my absolute favorite). And one of the things that I think has been perfected throughout the long run is building up to the big moments, especially the fight between the titular Lazarus (Lazarus?). This arc certainly does that, and now that we’ve reached the finale, we’re moving on to the next arc.

News from Fallout #6
Screenplay: Chris Condon
Artist: Jeffrey Alan Love
Author: Hassan Otuman Elaou
Designer: Michael Tivey
Publisher: Image Comics
This final chapter features an epic one-on-one clash with the evil General McCoy as Otis and the survivors of Old Joe attempt to escape through a network of pitch-black tunnels beneath the abandoned silver mining town of Deadwater, Nevada.
Why it’s cool: This unconventional story is a thrilling experiment in using comics to create an atmosphere essential to the story. And it’s safe to say that the visual storytelling was completely unlike anything I’ve read recently. Sometimes the story and the facts can feel blurry, but that’s part of the point. This finale is also a fitting end to the journey. One last thing to note is that designer Michael Tivey’s work is crucial to the experience of reading this series.

Twilight Zone #2
Writer/Artist: Tom Scioli
Publisher: IDW Publishing
In the farthest reaches of the galaxy, beyond the horizon of humanity and hope of salvation, a spaceship carrying a slumbering astronaut travels in search of intelligent extraterrestrial life. They left behind their families, the earth, their pasts, and all the trauma and solace they contained. But a crew of adventurers will discover that their past isn’t that far away and that intelligent alien life forms have their own plans for their future…in the Twilight Zone!
Why it’s cool: Every Tom Scioli comic is a must-read for me, and doubly so if it’s something weird (see the recent Godzilla: Monster Piece Theater for an example). Scioli, who makes self-contained Twilight Zone one-shots, falls right into that category. I was really looking forward to this book, and friends? We won’t disappoint.
