Winter soldier. Black Widow. Namor. Kua. Massacre. Wolverine. Six of Marvel’s most dangerous lonely people have come together as the new Avengers, but after their first brutal mission, one of them becomes revealed as a traitor. This is a series that I call “a thrilling and bloody remix of the classic Avengers Formula that trades dangerous alliances and brutal conflicts with old school heroes.”
Originally unveiled as the new Thunderbolt, the New Avengers by author Sam Humphries and artist Ton Lima, is one of the busiest releases of the summer, assembles a spirit-unpredictable roster that defines the era of Brian Michael Bendis and David Finch. On their debut mission, they were hunting the Kiruminati and fighting for clones of the original Illuminati – and now, now, the team is united…but barely. When they discover that one of their own has created the Kiruminati, the alliance is crushed and trust bursts.
The second arc, released in New Avengers #6 this November, discovered that the team was racing to stop the iron apex from producing more Illuminati doubles. However, survival is not guaranteed because of paranoia, which runs high and betrayed in the air. Stephen Segovia’s main cover teases fallout, while Paco Medina’s variant provides the first clue to the identity of the traitor.
“I fell in love with this team,” says Humphries. “Naturally, I decided to rip them off the inside and rip them off, and the Secrets both plague both the new Avengers and the Kilminati.
Humphreys also praised collaborator Ton Lima.
