NANA celebrates 25th anniversary with collaboration with punk rocker Vivienne Westwood

After unveiling a high-profile collection at Paris Fashion Week last weekend, luxury fashion brand Vivienne Westwood has announced an exciting new collaboration with VIZ. If you’re like me and love fashion as much as you love manga, the recently announced collaboration between these two iconic brands is perfect for you. On October 6, 2025, Cosmopolitan exclusively revealed that a new cover design is being created in collaboration with Vivienne Westwood to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Nana, written and illustrated by the elusive manga artist Ai Yazawa.

One of the best-selling manga of all time, Nana tells the story of two young women with the same name, Nana Komatsu and Nana Osaki, who share their lives despite the challenges they face. It is known for its iconic punk and post-punk fashion, inspired by the spirit of fashion designer Vivienne Westwood, including tartans, corsets, safety pins and platform boots. Inspired by the manga artist’s education in fashion school, her work uses fashion to tell stories that reflect the characters’ inner lives.

And Yazawa’s use of fashion is unique to Japan. “While many Western critics saw Westwood as leaning toward self-parody, he saw continuity and meaning in Japanese subcultural spaces,” writes Gil Prinsen in Yokogao. “Westwood’s history, irony, and embrace of gender fluidity spoke volumes in Japan, which was facing a generational identity crisis in the post-bubble era.”

“In Yazawa’s world, rebellion doesn’t mean burning down the system, it means surviving. It means walking through Shinjuku Station with your heart held high, even if your heart is torn apart. Westwood punk had anger, but Yazawa has rebellion laced with kindness.”
