The Beat is a Little Step Vol. by Nakama Press, a trace of Mud Cave Studios. 1This fall by Mimi Sheet. This inspiring graphic novel is drawn from the author’s own experiences and gives a glimpse into his adolescent journey.

Set against the backdrop of 2000s Hong Kong, this standalone release beautifully encapsulates the delicate nature of teenage friendship and the quiet courage needed to pursue one’s passion. With stunning illustrations and stories resonate with emotional authenticity, it follows the journey of a young girl who loves to draw and a boy who finds comfort in the guitar.

Please read the following official explanation:

Year 5 Yu-Kiu Lau always dreamed of studying at a foreign art university. However, she was afraid of others’ criticism of her work, so she couldn’t find it in herself to submit her work. One day, while Yu-Kiu was in the art room, she heard a beautiful guitar sound from downstairs. It turns out to be played by Ho-Yuet Lee, a classmate with a questionable reputation…

“It was an incredible honor to partner with Nakama Press,” Szeto said. “For a small step towards becoming my first commercially published comic and reaching an English-speaking audience, it really felt like a strong encouragement for my creative journey. I really believed that the language of comics is a universal thing that can cross both linguistic and cultural boundaries.”

Editor Kristen Simon said, “In an age when creativity was a brave leap, shy artists and dream musicians found strength and courage in each other, I was hesitant to share her beautiful art with the world.

A little step Vol. It hits one shelf on November 4th, 2025 and can be pre-ordered through local comic shops and your favorite bookstores!
