MSI’s new Claw gaming handheld features Lunar Lake processors and discreet ‘AI’ power

MSI has released two new versions of MSI Claw after the original debuted with a bang earlier this year. The company’s $900 MSI Claw 8 AI+ and $800 Claw 7 AI+ feature quality of life improvements like Lunar Lake Intel processing, improved battery life, and redesigned sticks, bumpers, and triggers.

According to a review by Engadget’s Sam Rutherford, the previous model was “a little slow and a little too expensive.” He said its performance was underwhelming compared to cheaper rivals, and that the software was too clunky and suffered from excessive optimization updates (probably because MSI scrambled to fix a long list of issues). ). Although we don’t have the new model, the switch to Intel’s latest Core Ultra 7 processors should result in better performance and lower power consumption. These are the two biggest points against A1M.

The Claw 8 AI+ has an 8-inch (1,920 x 1,200) display, and the Claw 7 AI+ has a 7-inch (1,920 x 1,080) display. Both devices support 120Hz refresh rate. However, these are LCD panels. You won’t find any OLED options like the Valve or Lenovo alternatives here yet.

Is that also… floating? (MSI)

The Claw 8 has an 80Wh battery, while the 7-inch model has a 54.5Wh battery. It uses MSI’s Cooler Boost HyperFlow technology, which includes dual fans and heat pipes. The company claims it outperforms its “competitor” (without saying which one) when operated at a power-efficient 17W.

Each handheld has a pair of Thunderbolt 4 ports, so you can connect your handheld to a monitor and use it as an instant Windows PC. CoPilot+ support is also built-in.

MSI has redesigned the new joystick, bumper, D-pad, and triggers for this generation. The previous model was equipped with a Hall effect stick, but the new model also has a Hall effect stick on the trigger. Ergonomics are an unusual highlight on previous models, with MSI touting the new handheld as “tuned to fit the natural contours of your hand.”

When it comes to AI in handheld brands, MSI likely refers to Intel chips’ XeSS upscaling technology. However, since the previous model also used XeSS, it may have just wanted to shout out to customers and investors that it utilizes AI.

The new handheld will arrive on December 25th. GameRant notes that its pre-order page is listed without stock (yet). Either way, once you get your hands on one, the Claw 7 AI+ will cost $800 and the Claw 8 AI+ will cost $900.
