Most affordable Android smartphones in 2024

The most affordable Android smartphones are a great way to get all the essentials you need in your phone without breaking the bank. While flagship smartphones often get the spotlight for their flashy features and hefty prices, there are also Android smartphones that offer superior performance at a fraction of the cost. In fact, Android’s vast ecosystem offers something for everyone, whether you’re looking for a high-end device or the best budget phone on the market.

If you’re not keen on buying an Apple iPhone or the latest flagship phone, affordable Android options can give you everything you need, from a solid camera to great battery life to nimble performance. These phones may not have all the bells and whistles found on phones costing hundreds of dollars, but for most people, they’re useful for handling day-to-day tasks and streaming videos. Enough to keep you connected.

How cheap should I go?

We tend to define cheap phones as between $150 and $350. Below this, your device risks suffering too many compromises, and above that you’ll end up moving to a more expensive mid-range phone (if you don’t mind spending more). We’ve listed some of our favorites at the end of this article).

But for those with a little extra, there are some things to consider. For example, it may be better to use a cheaper device for your child, especially if it’s primarily intended for emergencies or texting parents (not social media). At the top of this price range, sub-$350 phones have come a long way thanks to improved performance, better cameras with low-light capabilities, faster charging, and better displays like AMOLED panels. This makes it a strong alternative to flagship devices with premium designs, even if you have the flexibility to spend more.

What to look for in a cheap cell phone

When it comes to cheap phones, you get what you pay for. Most smartphones in this price range are made of plastic, but the fit and finish of a particular model can vary widely depending on price. A bright screen is also important. LCD panels with refresh rates of 60 Hz or 90 Hz are typically used, but some phones may have OLED or AMOLED screens with increased color saturation. Long battery life is also important to us, so we tend to prefer devices with larger power cells of around 5,000 mAh. Performance can vary widely in this price range, so look for a device with at least 8GB of RAM and a processor that can provide uninterrupted visuals. It is also important to consider the support period. Regular security updates and long-term software support extend the life of your device, saving you money in the long run.

one plus

Screen size: 6.72 inches | Storage capacity: 128GB + microSD | SIM card type: Nano-SIM | Front camera resolution: 16MP | Rear camera resolution: 108MP main, 2MP macro | Weight: 6.8 oz

When it first launched, the Nord N30 was basically everything you could want in a $300 phone. The Snapdragon 695 5G chipset delivers strong performance along with fast wireless connectivity that’s compatible with all major US carriers, not to mention great specs including 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, making it worth the upgrade. There is. It also has a large 6.7-inch display with a 120Hz refresh rate. This is unusual for budget phones, as most rivals have slower 60Hz or 90Hz panels. You can also top it up in no time thanks to 50W wired fast charging. We also provide timely software updates to ensure the longevity of your product. But most importantly, the Nord 30 was recently reduced in price from $300 to $250. This is definitely a bargain and our top pick in this area.

Pros Great performance for the price 120Hz display 50W wired charging $300 on Amazon

samsung

Screen size: 6.5 inches | Storage capacity: 128GB/256GB + microSD | SIM card type: Nano-SIM | Front camera resolution: 13MP | Rear camera resolution: 50MP main, 5MP ultrawide, 2MP macro | Weight: 7.05 oz

At just $200, the Galaxy A15 5G is quite a remarkable device. It has a 6.5-inch display with a 90Hz refresh rate, which is slightly slower than the Nord N30. However, it has an OLED panel instead of an LCD display, which means it boasts better brightness and richer colors than basically all of its rivals. On top of that, you get a 50MP main camera with stable performance even in low light, all in an incredibly affordable package. It can also be configured with up to 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage, and the 5,000 mAh battery provides an extremely long lifespan. The design isn’t all that exciting, but the polycarbonate Samsung uses for the back has a nice matte finish that’s closer to glass than cheaper plastic, making it look like a more premium design. Finally, the A15 comes with four years of security updates and three years of OS updates, which is longer than most devices in this price range.

Pros OLED display with great brightness and color Configurable with up to 256GB of storage 5,000mAh battery $200 on Amazon

motorola

Screen size: 6.5 inches | Storage capacity: 64GB + microSD | SIM card type: Nano-SIM | Front camera resolution: 8MP | Rear camera resolution: 50MP | Weight: 6.53 oz

For those on a very tight budget, the 2024 Moto G Play covers all the bases well. In addition to the fast Snapdragon 680 processor, it has 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. That last number may seem small, but the phone has a microSD card slot, so you can add more space if you need it. The 6.5-inch LCD screen is also surprisingly sharp with a 90Hz refresh rate. Moto G Play has an IP52 rating for dust and water resistance. It’s not a lot, but it’s enough to prevent an accidental droplet or two. Sure, the G Play is basic, but basic in a good way, especially if you’re not too fussed about running multiple apps and just need a handset to perform everyday tasks.

Pros 90Hz display IP52 rating Expandable storage via microSD card slot Cons Onboard storage is only 64GB $130 on Amazon

google

Screen size: 6.1 inches | Storage capacity: 128GB | SIM card type: Nano-SIM | Front camera resolution: 13MP | Rear camera resolution: Main 64MP, Ultrawide 13MP | Weight: 6.84 oz

For those looking to consider a phone in a higher budget category, there are some other contenders worth checking out. The Pixel 7a normally costs $499, but can sometimes be discounted to $349. So if you’re looking for an affordable device with great performance, useful perks like wireless charging, and one of the best main cameras of any device in this price range, consider this Pixel smartphone. It would be foolish not to. That’s a good deal. And while Google recently launched the Pixel 8a for $499, Google has confirmed that it will continue to sell the Pixel 7a.

Pros 90Hz OLED screen Long battery life Wireless charging now available Great camera Equally good Pixel-specific software Cons Wireless charging is a little slow No dedicated zoom lens Speaker sound is a little shallow $329 on Amazon

Another contender that we really like is the Nothing Phone 2a. It offers great specs, a unique premium design, and tons of personality for just $349. The main reason this product didn’t make the list is because it’s only available in the US as part of Nothing’s developer program, and you have to sign up (it’s free) before you can buy it. Additionally, the Phone 2a only supports T-Mobile’s 5G (via the N41 band), so it’s not the best option for those who use AT&T or Verizon.

Pros Unique design Great value Lightweight Amazing performance Cons No 5G on AT&T or Verizon No wireless charging Storage caps at 256GB $349 without

Frequently asked questions about Android smartphones

What is the difference between cheap Android and cheap iPhone prices?

iPhones tend to be more expensive than Android smartphones. The cheapest iPhone, the iPhone SE, starts at $429, but it’s a tough pill to swallow when compared to cheaper Android smartphones. In contrast, inexpensive Android devices can be had for as little as $100.
