Chrysler’s parent company, Stellantis, has issued a recall for 2019 and 2021-2024 model year Ram 1500 pickup trucks due to a software issue in the anti-lock braking system. According to a notice from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the bug could cause the anti-lock braking system to “disable the electronic stability control system,” increasing the risk of a crash.
The recall affects about 1.46 million vehicles worldwide, the majority of which are in the United States, according to Reuters. So far, no injuries or accidents related to the issue have been reported, according to Reuters. If the problem occurs, owners should see their ABS, ESC, adaptive cruise control and forward collision warning lights come on when starting their truck. The software issue does not affect basic braking, according to Reuters.
NHTSA says notices will be mailed to owners in early October, and owners will need to take their trucks to a dealer to have the ABS control module software updated. Currently, these vehicles do not comply with the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard for Electronic Stability Control Systems, according to NHTSA. If you’re not sure if your truck is subject to a recall, you can find out by entering your information into NHTSA’s recall search tool.
