Monument Valley 3 breaks the series’ old boundaries by adding sailing ships

More details about Monument Valley 3 have emerged during Netflix’s Geeked Week event, and developer Ustwo Games says the long-awaited sequel will build on its predecessor in several ways, particularly in terms of gameplay, art style, and story.

Perhaps the biggest change in Monument Valley 3 is the introduction of sailing. Because you can move your boat in just about any direction, “the game is no longer limited by geometric space,” game director Jennifer Esteris said in a conference call with reporters. Along with an unfolding cube that transports new protagonist Noor to different planes, Monument Valley 3 is primarily focused on “dismantling what we know,” Esteris said.

Naturally, these changes make for fresh puzzles and visuals as you navigate the seemingly impossible MC Escher-esque architecture. To coincide with this, Ustwo has evolved the art style towards softer, more abstract forms (you are navigating a river, after all). The result looks very familiar, but like a hazy memory, while the 18-piece orchestral soundtrack might stir emotions.

While the original game was about forgiveness and the sequel was a coming-of-age story, Monument Valley 3 focuses on themes of hope, unity and resilience. Noor is an apprentice lighthouse keeper tasked with finding a new source of power before the light fades from the world forever. Jamie Wotton, marketing manager at Ustwo, says this is the most “ambitious story” for a Monument Valley game yet.

All three Monument Valley games are standalone titles with their own storyline, meaning you can jump right into Monument Valley 3 without having played the first two, but there’s plenty of time to try out (or replay) them first. If you have a Netflix subscription, you won’t have to pay extra for these mobile gaming classics. Their games don’t have ads or in-app purchases.

Monument Valley is available to Netflix subscribers on iOS and Android starting today, with the sequel coming on October 29. Monument Valley 3 will be available exclusively on Netflix mobile on December 10.

Netflix also announced other mobile gaming news during Geeked Week: The multiplayer version of Battleship (including special weapons and ranked mode) will be released on September 24th. Subscribers will soon be able to play Civilization IV and Street Fighter IV CE on their mobile devices at no extra cost, with the Netflix version of the latter offering cross-play between iOS and Android.

Meanwhile, Netflix gave another tease of its multiplayer tie-in game, Squid Game: Unleashed, ahead of its release later this year. Finally, there was also a first look at Blood Line: A Rebel Moon Game, based on Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon film. The Netflix-exclusive cooperative action game from Vainglory developer Super Evil Megacorp is set to release in 2025.
