Earlier this year, Meta previewed Movie Gen, an AI video editing tool that looks impressively realistic (at least in the sample clips released). But Mehta said at the time that this was still a research project and there were no immediate plans to make the feature available to users.
But now it looks like Movie Gen may be coming to Instagram sooner rather than later. Top Instagram executive Adam Mosseri posted a short video previewing the seamless AI editing that will eventually be possible, saying the company hopes to bring this to Instagram next year. ” he said.
In the clip, Mosseri says Meta is “working on some really exciting AI tools” for video creators. “You should be able to do whatever you want with the video,” he says. “You could change your clothes, change the environment you sit in, add chains, anything you can think of.”
Mosseri’s background and outfit change several times in the short clip, including a brief shot where he looks like a Muppet-inspired character. Throughout the clip, transitions look very seamless with no obvious AI artifacts. Of course, that won’t necessarily be the case once Movie Gen actually becomes available and videos of that ability are no longer completely controlled by Meta. But if it works like Mosseri’s teaser video, it could open up some interesting possibilities for Instagram creators.
It’s probably no coincidence that Meta is teasing this feature days after OpenAI released its video generation model to subscribers. Meta has repeatedly said it wants its AI assistant to be the “most used” in the world, and in an update also published today, the company said Meta AI has “nearly” 600 million monthly users. Said to be a person.
Unfortunately, Mosseri didn’t specify exactly when the Movie Gen feature would actually arrive on Instagram, other than saying it would be sometime in 2024. However, he said there will be “more features coming” from the company.
