Metal Herlant, the French science fiction/fantasy magazine that inspired American heavy metal, is returning as a quarterly magazine, The Wrap has reported. Humanoids will soon launch a Kickstarter to bring Metal Harland to the US as a quarterly anthology, with contributions from comic book superstars Brian Michael Bendis, Matt Fraction, James Stokoe, Peach Momoko, Mark Waid, and more .
The move comes at the same time as Heavy Metal, a long-running U.S. variation of the magazine, is also being revived as a Kickstarter anthology.
The original Metal Hurlant was co-founded in 1974 by comics legends Mœbius and Philippe Druillet, and became known for its singular brand of mind-bending fantasy, behind classics such as The Incal. Ta. Heavy Metal was released by National Lampoon in 1977 and licensed its work from Metal Harlant, inspiring a whole new generation of young American readers to get high on comics.
Metal Harland ran in France until 1987, had a brief revival in the United States in 2002, and had a successful revival in France in 2021.
Metal Hurlant has also launched a publishing company, Humanoids. The publisher was acquired by 23-year-old publisher Fabrice Giger in 1988 and re-entered the US market in 1999, where it has remained ever since.
The new edition of Humanoids’ Metal Hurlant will be a thick quarterly anthology, with issues expected to run over 272 pages. “Metal Harland’s ongoing mission is to captivate readers, blaze new trails, and publish bold and transgressive storytellers,” Humanoid publisher Giger said in a statement. .
According to The Wrap, the revival will include out-of-print and rarely seen works by Möbius, Philippe Drouillet and Jean-Pierre Dionnay, as well as vintage stories not previously available in English.
“Although much of the material in Metal Harland is original, bringing archival content, such as Möbius’s short stories, back to print editions allows us to introduce some of the most iconic cartoonists of all time to a new generation. We can,” Giger said. . “Our aim is to curate a reading experience of gems from the legendary past of metallurgy in France, alongside insightful cultural reportage and new complete stories by modern masters. .”
Other content includes:
• All-new stories from Brian Michael Bendis, Matt Fraction, Carla Pacheco, James Stockoo, Fabian Fellman, Mark Waid, and more.
• Iconic comic about Philip K. Dick by Robert Crumb.
• Features, essays, and interviews with top creators including Ted Chiang, William Gibson, Alan Moore, Denis Villeneuve, and more.
