Meta is preparing to add a display to its popular Ray-Ban smart glasses, according to a report in the Financial Times. These screens could appear on future versions of the device as early as next year. The likely release date is late 2025.
The screen will likely be smaller and used to display notifications and responses from Meta’s AI virtual assistant, according to people familiar with Meta’s plans. It’s highly unlikely that the company plans to make this a full mixed reality device for now.
To that end, Meta has the recently announced Orion AR glasses, which are still a few years away. The same report indicates that the positive response to the Orion glasses may have accelerated development and perhaps secured a commercial release. It was unclear whether these glasses remained an in-house prototype.
Ray-Ban smart glasses were a surprise hit for Meta, and it’s easy to see why. It looks great and performs great. The current model includes in-ear speakers, a camera, microphone, and access to Meta’s virtual assistant.
I really like the simplicity of the current design, especially when taking photos and videos. My hope is that the screen doesn’t get in the way of that simplicity, and that the screen doesn’t come at the expense of things like better camera systems.
All in all, the Ray-Ban Meta glasses are the perfect device for taking quick photos of your pet. Have you ever pulled your phone out of your bag and tried to get an animal to stay still so you could take a photo? Those poor kids would never do that. Ray-Ban solves that problem.
