Maverick, a young adult imprint from Mad Cave Studios, has released a new graphic novel to be released this winter. The beat has all the details. In December, Queen Kodiak will clash. Shelves from author Christopher Greenret, illustrator Riccardo Faisini, colorist Diabla Kelly and letter Justin Burch.
Queen Kodiak follows 17-year-old Joey King. Joey King moves in with his father, an Alaska State Police officer, after his mother’s death. There, she becomes friends with the legendary Grizzly Bear. As you can imagine, this triggers a chain of wild events.
Here’s the complete overview:
After his mother’s death, he made a 17-year-old move with his father on Kodiak Island, Alaska, before becoming friends with the legendary 3,000-pound bear. Unfortunately, the inevitable capture of the bear involves a thousand-year-old monster grizzly named Queen Kodiak of the Kierans destroying everything in her path and collecting the turnips.
Following in the massive footsteps of legends like Godzilla and King Kong, comes Queen Kodiak, a huge, super-charged Kodiak grizzly bear. And, even though Queen Kodiak had been asleep for thousands of years, her hibernation was prevented by melting ice and subsequent structural activities. And in her debut graphic novel, she wakes up to find her only Cub missing.
But as much as we want to meet her and see her shipwreck in the Pacific Northwest, our story centers around Joey Fox, a 17-year-old girl, and nature’s sympathy, who is now friends with Queen Kodiak’s Cub after a structural shift in her life. As a result, Joey was sent to Kodiak Island in Alaska, where he lived with the man who left them 10 years ago, her father of a state trooper. In many ways, it is a story about how families survive the overwhelming odds.

“I had been frieing my mother’s death beforehand since I was 15. When she was diagnosed with leukemia and lymphoma, that’s how old I was,” Greenslate said in the announcement. “The book sheds light on the fear of losing her. He confronts the monster of sadness to ease the inevitable blow. So, in this story, he is with Joey Fox, an emotionally raw, stubborn, outcast child who feels the loss of his mother while feeling forced to be with his Alaskan father. She becomes friends with the legendary Kodiak Grizzly.
Artist Faisini said, “It was a lot of fun from the beginning to work on Queen Kodiak. From the creation of the character design, I was passionate about them and replaced them in the story. The vibe of the story is exciting and it was a surprise to see the protagonist’s evolution through her dramatic story. Definitely explode!”
Queen Kodiak will be available anywhere the book will be on sale on December 9th. Pre-orders are currently available.
