In 2018, Mattel was hit hard when he lost his DC Toy license to Canadian Children’s Entertainment Company, the most famous Spin Master for Mega Hit Paw Patrol Franchise. There have been many changes over the years since McFarlane Toys plummeted and included closing only DC Direct to take over the remaining inventory control. With the most unexpected development, it was announced today that Mattel will regain its DC license rights and create “DC-themed action figures, playsets, accessories, role-play products, adult colleges.”
The agreement will “begin later in 2026” so that the current license agreement between Spinmaster and Warner Bros. expires. So, although there are no Mattel DC products related to this year’s James Gunn Superman film, it’s a safe bet that Mattel is preparing for Supergirl products in time for the film release next summer. I personally hope that this means you can expect action figures of creature commands based on the amazing animated series.
Mattel has certainly risen over the last few years. In 2022, the company regained its license to produce Disney Princesses and frozen dolls almost ten years after losing to Hasbro in 2014. Additionally, it was reported that Mattel’s net sales increased by $18 million in the fourth quarter of 2024.
What this comes with the future of DC licensing under McFarlane Toys is yet to be seen. With Toy Fair taking place in New York City this weekend, we must be interested in knowing.
