Marvel Comics has announced that influential Iron Man artist Will Portacio will be creating a series of variant covers for Iron Man by Spencer Ackerman, Julius Ohta, and Javier Pina, starting with Iron Man #3 in December. He revealed that he would draw. Portacio did some seminal work with this character in the ’90s. To show his influence, Portacio also graces the series with variant covers for Iron Man #3-5.
“Portacio is one of the most unique and visually dynamic artists in the history of comics,” Ackerman said. “Even before we knew we’d be blessed with a variant cover for Whilce, Julius and I were talking about how we could incorporate the tangle of cables that Whilce used to show how powerful the Heroes Reborn-era Iron Man suit was. In issue 3, you’ll find Julius paying direct homage to Whilce’s legendary designs.
Portacio’s first cover depicts the destruction of Tony’s iconic “Heroes Reborn” armor, which Portacio designed and used during his run. Tony then gets to work on his new “improvised armor” on the artist’s second cover, before powering it up for the first time in the last installment of the Portacio series. Colored by series colorist Alex Sinclair, these three covers spotlight the distinctive way Portacio brings the inner workings of Tony’s technology and craftsmanship to the page.
