Oni Press is releasing the highly anticipated debut, CALAVERA, PI. Created by acclaimed cartoonist Marco Finnegan (Morning Star, Night People), the comic is released just in time for Hispanic Heritage Month and is a stylish take on the mystery genre.

“The story begins in Los Angeles, where the Roaring Twenties are at their height, jazz is taking over the clubs, Hollywood starlets are the talk of the town, and the Latin lover mystique is the latest craze,” said Finnegan when asked to describe the series. “At its center is private investigator Juan Calavera, the City of Angels’ best detective. His mastery of disguise, daring adventures, and steamy romances were the talk of the town until he was gunned down. Five years later, a horrific crime rocks the city and the detective returns from the dead. He returns to an unfamiliar Los Angeles where he must solve multiple crimes, including his own murder.”

CALAVERA, PI also features a gallery of unforgettable covers by talented artists such as Marco Finnegan (Morning Star, Night People), Ramón K. Pérez (A Tale of Sand), Esteban Sánchez (Cruelty Squad) and J. Gonzo (La Mano del Destino). The comic will be available in bookstores nationwide on November 6th, so if you’re interested…

Check out the synopsis and preview page below.

In 1925, Juan Calavera died a hero. A career outside the law defending Chicano neighborhoods where the police refused to act earned him a fearless reputation…and a gunshot wound to the stomach. Now, on Day of the Dead, five years later, his restless spirit is summoned from the grave to help a desperate former colleague solve a kidnapping that hits close to home. With only days to solve the case before he’s called back to the underworld, can Calavera uncover the true identity of the masked human trafficker known as La Fantasma before tragedy strikes again…and solve his own murder mystery in the process?

Praise for CALAVERA, PI #1:

“Silent-era Hollywood, snappy noir dialogue, dead people rising from their graves, pentagrams carved into parks, clowns kidnapping children for ransom. Add in some hyper-stylized artwork by the likes of Mike Mignola and Charles Burns, a touch of Will Eisner’s Spirit, and a sprinkling of Los Angeles history and social commentary, and you get a dark thriller in The Calavera Detective.”

— Chris Condon, That Texas Blood, Night People

“In the tradition of The Spirit and Zorro, Calavera is pulpy, fast-paced from the first frame and keeps up the momentum until the very end. The book plunges you into a world of action, trusting you to keep up as fists and bullets fly. And just when you’re comfortable with the rhythm of the story and think you know the genre and what to expect, an unexpected twist awaits and leaves you wanting more!”

—Vita Ayala (The New Mutants, The Wilds, Submerged)
