The state of comics journalism just took a big hit with the Kickstarter launch of The Comic Courier, a new print newspaper aimed at filling the void in serious comics criticism.
THE COMICS COURIER is the brainchild of Tiffany Babb (PanelxPanel, Popverse) and is published in print as a biannual tabloid newspaper dedicated to in-depth coverage of comics. Contributors include Douglas Wolk, Hassan Otsman Elaou, Tiffany Babb, Dave Baker, Carrie McClain, Sean Dillon, Kat Karamia, Lisa and Brad Gullikson, Liam McGuire, Jim McDermott, and Lily.・Contains portraits of active comic book artists such as Hochwender.
Babu explains why this is necessary: “The Comic Courier is a love letter to comics, but more than that, it’s a love letter to comics criticism. Comics criticism is an essential part of the industry, but with each passing year, there is less support and space for it. We hope The Comic Courier can serve as a space to celebrate and share great work by great critics for many years to come.”
The just-launched Comics Courier Kickstarter campaign is already accelerating toward its goal, and we need to support it. You need to write well about comics in a permanent format, not just a YouTube video or a 200-word snippet on a toxic bot platform. And check out all the cool perks, including limited-edition prints by comic artists Lee Gatlin, Dave Baker, and Nicole Gu, branded press notes, sponsorship slots, and more.
Did I mention the brand reporter’s notebook?
This is sure to be the most envied status symbol in the SDCC press room.
Why do comics need criticism? We’ll talk about that in a future post, but for now, move on to THE COMICS COURIER campaign and support this noble cause.
