Following the success of the limited edition MFKZ Omnibus Kickstarter campaign, Magnetic Press has released the first three volumes of a five-volume set in Guillaume “Lan” Renard’s acclaimed MFKZ graphic novel series. Today, The Beat has an exclusive preview of Volume 1.
MFKZ originates from Leonard’s 2002 short film Mutafkaz: Operation Blackhead, which also spawned the 2017 Netflix animated film MFKZ from Studio 4C, directed by Leonard and Shojiro Nishimi and starring Vince Staples, Ken Michael, Giancarlo Esposito, Michael Chiklis, Danny Trejo, and RZA.
MFKZ follows a character named Angelino. Angelino’s best friend and roommate Vinz’s head is a flaming skull, but that’s not the weirdest thing in their lives. Click here for a detailed synopsis of Volume 1. 1:
Angelino, like thousands of others in Dark Meat City, is a young loser. His monotonous days alternate between television, Mexican wrestling matches, menial odd jobs, and metaphysical discussions under the stars with his buddy Vinz. A stupid scooter accident throws him into an unimaginable storm of trouble, and the fate of humanity is at stake. Heavily armed men in black, gangs of all kinds, and a group of Mexican wrestlers all collide to face off against a vicious alien being intent on invading Earth.

“First realized as an animated short by Run in 2002, ‘Mutafkaz: Operation Blackhead’ established a world that grew into a whole world of interconnected characters and intrigue,” said Mike Kennedy, founder and publisher of Magnetic Press.
“The idea grew beyond the scope of that seven-minute short story, and he had no choice but to turn his vast vision into a sprawling five-volume graphic novel series that set new heights for the medium, capturing the imagination of a hungry audience in the process,” he continued.
MFKZ Vol. 1, Vol. 2, and Vol. 3 is available now wherever books are sold. MFKZ Vol. 4 is scheduled to be released in January 2026, and Vol. 5, which will be released in February 2026, is available for pre-order.
