Mad Cave Studios has announced a new fantasy series, Soot Steased Heart. The beat has all the details. The series, which debuted in December, is co-written by Joni Hegg and Stipan Morian, colored by Lopeman and illustrated by Morian, written by Hassan Osmane Elhau.
This winter story combines elements of frostpunk, steampunk and folklore for a story of rebellion. Here’s the complete overview:
The Union is a mysterious city in the deep north, but is ruled by the cruel governor Glass and the lord of his factory. Coal is a lifeline for the city, and life can be difficult for honest workers like the stones of young Peggy because of evil quotas. Getting extra coal at the end of the year must be bad every day! Peggy’s life is thrown into confusion when she is imprisoned and sent to exile.
“Our soot dyed heart is a strange story that mixes familiar winter stories and traditions with a variety of myths in a unique fantasy setting,” said writer Joni Hegg. “This isn’t a single story retelling and doesn’t use the Christmas character “As-Is.”
“Instead, we reimagined them in a whole new world. It is based on my Finnish cultural mindscape and the Balkan legacy of Stipan. At its core, the book speaks of the need for the working class to oppose oppression,” continues Hegg. “For me, writing is always about big ideas, and this is a big idea book with easy delivery.”
Co-writer and artist Morian added that he and Hug have been working on our soot dirty heart for over three years.
“I was burning with my first book, a 20th century man. I knew I had to sing this. Peggy is, for me, a lamb lost in the forest with her designs. “She is the institution of young people, the power to move. Readers will find themselves not only in her journey, but in the mirror of revolution, resilience and choice that surrounds her.”
Our Soot Dyeing Heart #1 will be available digitally on December 10th at our local comic shop and will be in advance from September 19th.
