Yuichi’s parents and sisters died in a car accident, and Yurichi’s nephew Ayumu stays behind. Yuichi vows to look after Ayumu like his son, and the two move together to a seaside town where they meet Ryo, the owner of a handsome deli who has his own painful past.

This manga is a heartbreaking story focused on characters trying to solve their past, sadness and trauma. There is much to overcome as Yujichi, Ayumu and Ryo grow up and form small families.
Ayumu is a little on the quiet, stoic side. Yuichi works hard for him, but we don’t know if he’s doing the right thing. Ryo finds himself drawn to Yuki, having escaped the painful past as an adoptive son and a horrifying family, and later as an escort in a big city. I can’t help but feel that Yuichi was drawn in order by Ryo. And despite the first push and pull, love develops slowly between them.
Manga character development is fun to watch. All three leads change over the course of the story. This is what ultimately allows them to come together as a loving unit.
Perhaps some of my favorite scenes are when the characters visit the beachside to collect glass of ocean. It is a repetitive motif in the story, tying Ayumu, Ryoi and Yuichi together.

Yuichi shows his kindness in a particularly sweet scene where Ryo shares a snippet of his rough past. This statement surprises ryo. Talking to someone is amazing, and Yuichi didn’t mean it romantically, but it’s a romantic gesture.
This boys’ love cartoon is filled with scenes that transcend such dialogue gems and heart-warming scenes. I admit that it was a bit misty in some places as I internally pleaded for this story to have a happy ending.
Because the pacing is very stable and slower than the other BLs I’ve read, and the focus is on character development rather than the plot. There is also a decline and flow to the comics, with flashbacks alternating with the current story, revealing important information about the characters and how their past has been shaped. Each character has some darkness in their lives, and the manga moves at a dignified pace, showing how Yuichi, Ayumu and Ryo grow.
With beautiful ocean views and gorgeous characters expressing vibrant emotions, the birds sleep in the sea. It perfectly conveys the different tones of the theme and story. If you’re looking for a more serious fare that will pull your heart, look no further.
