LG’s Gram laptops are back with new updates ahead of CES 2025. It’s been a decade since the thin and light lineup has been in LG’s portfolio, and the latest model is powered by AI (surprise!) to improve performance while maintaining its trademark portability.
Four new models will be announced at CES: two variants of the Gram Pro, the new Gram Pro 2-in-1, and the entry-level Gram Book. The first version of the Gram Pro comes with an Intel Core H-series (Arrow Lake) processor for more traditional laptop tasks (including some gaming). The second model uses Intel Core Ultra V-series (Lunar Lake) chips for AI tasks. The latter is the Microsoft Copilot+ PC, which has all the AI features you’d expect from this line, including Recall, Live Captions, Cocreator, and Windows Studio Effects.
Even if you don’t choose the Copilot+ variant, you can still take advantage of LG’s AI features on most new models (all except the Gram Book). These are divided into two groups: on-device and cloud-processed AI tasks. On-device capabilities include a minified chatbot derived from LG’s EXAONE large-scale language model. Also added is LG’s Time Travel. This is a feature similar to Microsoft’s Recall, which lets you recall web pages, documents, videos, and audio files that you’ve visited or used. It’s unclear whether or how LG’s version can avoid the privacy pitfalls that Microsoft encountered with its recall.
Cloud-based AI capabilities include Gram Chat Cloud, a more robust chatbot (powered by GPT-4o) that can integrate with calendar and email services.
Gram Pro comes with a 17-inch (Arrow Lake) or 16-inch (Lunar Lake) screen with a 2,560 x 1,600 LCD screen. Variable refresh rate is up to 144Hz. Both versions feature up to 32 GB (LPDDR5X up to 8,400 MHz, dual channel) of RAM and 2 TB of storage.
The Arrow Lake model is supposed to be a solid gaming laptop with RTX 4050 graphics. AI/Lunar Lake models only have integrated Intel graphics. But at least the latter is lighter and thinner, weighing in at 2.73 pounds. compared to 3.26 lbs for the Arrow Lake model.
LG
LG won the CES 2025 Innovation Award for its latest Gram Pro 2-in-1. The top configuration features a 16-inch screen with a 2,880 x 1,800 OLED display (variable refresh rate of 120Hz). The cheaper version is limited to 2,560 x 1,600 LCD (144Hz VRR). The 2-in-1 comes with a wirelessly chargeable stylus and, as the name suggests, can be folded into tablet mode.
Finally, the Gram Book is an entry-level model that LG is launching “to expand its presence in the U.S. market.” Its screen is a 1,920 x 1,080 15.6-inch LCD with just 60Hz. An Intel Core i5 CPU with integrated Intel graphics and up to 16 GB of RAM make it the most underpowered product. The heaviest one is also 3.75 pounds.
Unfortunately, I don’t know how “entry level” it is. LG has not yet announced pricing information (or release date) for the new laptop.
