Few comics can claim to be part of a larger movement featuring activism or fundraising efforts for nonprofit organizations. Edgardo Miranda Rodríguez’s “La Borinqueña” is one such comic, whose titular protagonist fosters a discussion about the Puerto Rican diaspora and the different forms of justice that a community that has historically struggled to keep their identity and traditions alive can still pursue.
Miranda Rodriguez has been working to allow his comic book characters to serve as spokespeople for these causes since the first issue was published in 2016, and now the entire first story arc of La Borinqueña has been collected together in a deluxe hardcover edition that’s both the perfect starting point for new fans and a fantastic collector’s item for those who’ve been on the journey with us since the beginning.
La Borinqueña Volume 1 features original cover art by Angel Jesús Colón and interior art by Will Rosado (GI Joe) and Christopher Sotomayor (Avengers). For those unfamiliar with the story, La Borinqueña sees the title protagonist facing a series of threats that represent some of the many ills that have plagued Hispanic and immigrant communities in the United States, particularly on the island of Puerto Rico.
La Borinqueña has realized that her identity is her superpower, which is immediately apparent when you see her suit and cape dyed in the colors of the Puerto Rican flag. Mimicking Captain America’s strategy, La Borinqueña’s physical presence at all times lets people know that a powerful Puerto Rican is now on the lookout for justice and truth.
A portion of the proceeds from the book will go towards Miranda Rodriguez’s ongoing charity work, which has already raised $200,000 to be donated to various local organizations in Puerto Rico. This alone proves that the character has an impact outside of comic books. Reconstruction: Reminiscing and Reconstructing Puerto Rico is one of the most striking examples. The book was created in collaboration with some of the most prominent figures in the comics industry with the express purpose of raising funds for the reconstruction process after Hurricane Maria hit the island of Puerto Rico in 2017.
Always with an eye on growth and expansion, Miranda Rodríguez has also announced the release of four 1:12 scale figures from the world of La Borinqueña. The set includes La Borinqueña, Luz, Oro El Coqui Dorado and La Galgora, which will be produced by Boss Fight Studios.
The hardcovers and action figures will be available for pre-order at retailers starting this September in time for the holiday release.
To read La Borinqueña is to join a movement, and the new hardcover offers new readers the opportunity to do just that.
