Earlier this year, Max announced it was ordering a straight-to-series live-action series called Lanterns, which will focus on Green Lantern members Hal Jordan and John Stewart. Chris Mundy (Welcome to Ozark) will serve as showrunner on the series and will co-write the script with Damon Lindelof and Tom King. Today, it was revealed by The Hollywood Reporter that actor Kyle Chandler, best known for his Emmy-winning role as Eric Taylor in Friday Night Lights, has been cast in the role of Hal Jordan.
Since DC Studios, led by filmmaker James Gunn and producer Peter Safran, this new direction for DC’s staple of iconic heroes definitely seems to be full steam ahead. It all starts with something called “Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters.” According to THR, the series is set to start filming in Atlanta between January and June. With any luck, by the next San Diego Comic-Con in July, DC Studios will hold its first Hall H panel presentation and show off some footage.
In 2020, Max announced plans for a Green Lantern series developed by executive producers and writers Seth Grahame-Smith and Marc Guggenheim, along with executive producers Greg Berlanti, Geoff Johns, Sarah Schechter, and David Madden. Obviously, these plans were overhauled with the aforementioned formation of DC Studios.
A quick look at social media shows that some people are questioning the idea of Hal Jordan being depicted as decades older than he is in the comics, but overall fans seem ecstatic to see Kyle Chandler in the film.
With Nathan Fillion set to make his debut as fan-favorite GL Guy Gardner in James Gunn’s next Superman film, it’s tempting to think the character might make an appearance. With any luck, it won’t be long until John Stewart’s casting is announced. Keep an eye out here for the announcement.
