Bunn chatted with The Beat about the new comic and campaign.
DEANNA DESTITO: Why did you choose Outland and Kickstarter for these titles?
Karen Bunn: I’ve known the good folks at Outland for some time and have been a fan of their approach to publishing. I love that they do prose, comics, RPGs, board games, etc. I love that they are open to all kinds of stories. I like how agile they are. A while back I started running the Outer Shadows horror imprint. We’ve published anthologies like Swords in the Shadows, novellas like Raze, and comics like The Faraway. However, I wanted to draw a series of comics inspired by my love of B-grade horror movies. That line ended up becoming these three one-shot comics. I loved that Outland was as excited about this project as I was.
Destito: Can you tell us a little about each book?
Bang: Of course! With these three books, I really wanted to explore different horror subgenres and styles.
THE WINDOW, illustrated by Luai Ngawan (colors by Paul Little, letters by Shannon Potratz), is a bizarre horror story about a mother and her two sons who move into a small house after a family feud. They discover that one of the house’s windows opens out to an otherworld inhabited by terrifying creatures. As they look out, other creatures peek out as well.
The Long Pig and Azrael, illustrated by Emmanuel Casaros (colors by Paul Little, letters by Shannon Potratz), is a “road horror” story about an unfortunate man called Long Pig. . He hitchhikes along dusty deserted roads, always looking for hot meals to feed his demonic compatriot Azrael.
DEATH DUEL WITH THE CHAINSAW WITCHES, written by Diogo Carvalho, tells the story of three heavy metal songstresses who hunt down the demons they unleash on a rock and roll festival.
DESTITO: What is it like working with each creative team?
Bang: I was really happy. One of the things I love most about comics is the collaborative process. I like each artist to take a different approach to my scripts. I’m enjoying the interaction. For these three books, I really wanted different artistic styles to best represent the different stories, and I think it worked. Each artist brings their own personal and unique twist to their story. Choosing the right artists for each project was a challenge, but we loved the way everything came together.
Destito: Why do you enjoy working in the horror genre?
Bang: For me, writing horror is therapeutic. I can tackle my own personal fears head on. No, I’m not afraid of being eaten by the devil on the highway, but I do get anxious when I meet people I don’t know. I may not live in a house with aliens outside, but I have felt the fear of having my life completely changed and not knowing what to do next. I have never fought demons at a concert, but I have struggled with the mistakes I have made and the impact those mistakes have had (on myself and others).
DESTITO: Horror is not one sound, there are many different types of horror. What is your favorite?
Bang: Oh, there are so many types and I like almost all of them! If I had to choose a favorite, it would probably be between action/horror and folk horror. Of the two, folk horror (especially with a dash of cosmic horror) takes the top spot.
Destito: Do you ever make fun of your supporters?
Bang: Each of these comics is a complete stand-alone story, so you can jump into three different worlds right away (if you get all three). There are some really fun reward tiers that make each book completely unique, including the “Bloody” tier where I personally get my “blood” splattered. We also have some cool surprises in store for updates along the way. Words cannot express how grateful I am to everyone who helped make these three books a reality.
